New Zealand opener Martin Guptill gained his form back, and stuck a well-crafted hundred, while New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum scored a blazing fifty against Sri Lanka in Dunedin.

The Black Caps posted an imposing 409, losing eight wickets, by the end of day’s play, courtesy Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson, who also scored a half-century in the first day of the 1st Test.

Brendon McCullum, in particular, was at his dazzling best and took the Sri Lanka bowlers on. The Kiwi skipper made a 57-ball 75, featuring 13 fours and one six.

Sri Lanka bowlers paid the price of not bowling in the right channel, and were too full to start with. They, however, came back strongly in the final session, taking six wickets.

Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep and Dushmantha Chameera took two wickets each, while Angelo Mathews and Milinda Siriwardana chipped-in with a wicket apiece.

Earlier, Martin Guptill and Tom Latham laid a solid foundation, after New Zealand were asked to bat first by Sri Lanka.
