BCCI seeks multimillion dollar settlement from West Indies Board

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has come down hard on the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) for infamously ending the tour by asking for $42 million compensation to fend off a lawsuit for abandoning the series.

The West Indies were to play five ODIs, one-off T20 and three Test matches, but left the country after the fourth one-dayer in Dharamshala. The loss incurred by the Indian Cricket Board is estimated at $41.97 million as the West Indies didn’t play one ODI, T20 and Test series.

Because of Windies’ abrupt departure, the Indian board incurred huge lose mainly from the media rights, which is estimated at $35 million. The BCCI also suffered $2 million loss from stadium gate money and $1.6 million from title sponsorship.

According to reports, BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel in a letter informed the West Indies board to compensate the losses in team sponsorship, kit sponsorship and in-stadia sponsorships within 15 days.

“The BCCI calls upon the WICB to formally inform the BCCI, in writing, of the steps it intends to take to compensate the BCCI towards the losses quantified above as well as those losses yet to be quantified by the BCCI in relation to the cancelled WICB tour,” said the letter.

“In the event the BCCI does not receive such a proposal in acceptable terms, within a period of 15 days from receipt of this letter, please note that the BCCI has peremptorily instructed its attorneys to initiate steps for recovery of the losses by filing appropriate legal proceedings against the WICB in the appropriate Indian court and you may treat this notice as a formal demand in that regard.”

The reports also suggest that the Windies Cricket Board corporate communication manager, Imran Khan has confirmed that the WICB has received the letter from the Indian Cricket Board.
