When Steve Smith gets going there is no stopping for him and continued his striking form against the West Indies. He, however, failed to complete a double-hundred as Jerome Taylor ended his majestic innings on 199.

Smith became the third Australian, after Steve Waugh and Matthew Elliott, to fall on 199 but the way he built his innings was simply amazing. He propelled Australia to 399 at the Sabina Park to give Australia an upper hand in the contest.

“I was pretty nervous when he got to 180 and 190,” Australian Nathan Lyon said. “It’s one of those things we’re you’re disappointed for him but on the other hand it’s 199 runs, it’s a pretty amazing achievement.”

“I’m pretty sure the way Steve’s batting he’ll get the opportunity to get a lot more runs,” he added. “I feel for him but also excited for him.”

After Smith’s stunning century, it was Lyon’s turn to write his name in the history books as he become Australia’s leading off-spinner. Lyon, who now has 144 Test wickets, surpassed Hugh Trumble’s record of 141.

Lyon took three wickets on the second day, while pacer Josh Hazlewood also took three as the West Indies ended the day on 143/8 and trailing by 256 runs.

“I think it comes down to whether Pup feels like we can bowl them out in a day again or give our bowlers a rest,” Lyon said. “I’m pretty proud. It’s a big moment.”

“As I keep saying, and always say, I’ll look back at these things at the end of my career. I am proud of the achievement that’s for sure. It’s a big record to break. Hopefully I can add to it.”
