Ranji Trophy Round up: Vidarbha, Assam post comprehensive victories

Vidarbha beat Gujarat while Assam triumphed over hosts Goa in the seventh round of the Ranji Trophy 2014-15 season. Akshay Wakhare starred with the ball in Vidarbha’s victory while S Purkayastha once again helped set-up the game for Assam. Here are the highlights of the day:

Karnataka vs Baroda: Three points on the basis of first innings lead against Karnataka in Mysore have strengthened Baroda’s position at the third place in the Group A points table. The Vinay Kumar-led side got one for their effort in the game. Earlier, resuming on 204/8, Baroda were bowled out for addition of 50 runs to their overnight total setting Karnataka a 288-run target to chase.

Sagar Manglorkar then ran through the top half of the Karnataka attack to leave the hosts reeling on 50/5. However, Shreyas Gopal helped the hosts pull off a draw. When the match was called off, Karnataka were 153/7 with the lower middle-order bat unbeaten on 51.

Tamil Nadu vs Mumbai: Tamil Nadu strengthened their position in the Group A points table with a comprehensive innings and 44-run win over Mumbai at the Chepauk.

Uttar Pradesh vs Bengal: With no play possible on the second, third and fourth day, the match was declared a draw. Both teams were granted a point each.

Jammu & Kashmir vs Railways: The Anureet Singh-led Railways attack bowled J&K out for 114 to seize a first innings lead and three points with it. Having lost the entire second to bad weather which also affected play on the first and third day, the hosts resumed their innings on 213/4 and declared it on 234/5 earlier on the fourth day. Singh then claimed 5/48 while KK Upadhyay and Ranjit Mali picked two wickets each to skittle the opposition out. When the match was called off Railways were 18 without loss in the second innings.

Gujarat vs Vidarbha: Akshay Wakhare bowled Vidarbha to a 120-run win against Gujarat that earned the side six points from the game. The visitors declared on the overnight score of 307/8 setting the hosts a 296-run target in Surat. Wakhare then ran through the Gujarat line-up claiming 7/70 to bowl the side out for 175.

Maharashtra vs Delhi: Maharashtra collected three points on the basis of a first innings lead against Delhi in the drawn match at Pune. The visitors were given a point for their effort. Resuming on 187/5 on the fourth morning, Maharashtra were bowled out for 366 later in the day. Shrikant Mundhe scored 104 in the effort while Chirag Khurana made 80 to help set Delhi a 390-run target. Delhi were 78/3 in the second innings when the match was called off.

Odisha v Team Rajasthan: Team Rajasthan cantered to a ten-wicket win against Odisha to collect seven points from the match.

Saurashtra v Haryana: Saurashtra picked six points from their 62-run win against Haryana in Rajkot.

Himachal Pradesh vs Andhra Pradesh: Andhra declared their innings on 336/8 after resuming on 301/6 on the fourth day. Having lost a day to bad weather which also effected play on first and third day the teams strove to complete at least one innings each. However, HP trudged on to avoid being bowled out and were 186/7 when the match was called off in the evening. Both teams received one point each from the drawn game.

Goa vs Assam: Assam gained seven points for a thumping ten-wicket win against hosts Goa on the last day of the game. S Purkayastha, who had claimed five wickets in Goa’s first innings picked 6/76 to help bowl the home team out for 268 and set-up the game in visitors favour. The openers then chased down the nine runs needed for victory in nine balls.

Jharkhand vs Hyderabad: Jharkhand bowled Hyderabad out for 455 in the first innings after the visitors resumed on 377/7 in the morning to seize a first innings lead. The home team then declared their second innings on 189/4 later in the day. Chasing the 290-run target, Hyderabad were seven without loss of wicket when the match was called off. The hosts received three points on the basis of a first innings lead while the visitors gained one.

Tripura vs Kerala: Kerala gained three points on the basis of a first innings lead while Tripura received one after the match ended in a drawn at Agartala. Resuming their second innings on 84/2 Tripura were 295/9 when the match was called off. Amit Verma claimed 5/61 in the innings.
