Ranji Trophy Round Up: Sachin Baby scores double-hundred

Lower-order batsmen Shardul Thakur and Shreyas Iyer staged Mumbai’s revival and helped the team to a first innings lead in Kanpur while J&K maintained an upper-hand against hosts Baroda at the end of Day 3. After putting his team in a commanding position with a century, Jalaj Saxena claimed a fifer to enforce follow-on on hosts TN.

Unmukt Chand tipped the scales in Delhi’s favour with a century while Kerala captain Sachin Baby posted an unbeaten double-ton against Goa in the third round of Ranji Trophy 2014-15. Here are the highlights for the day:

Baroda vs J&K: In reply to J&K’s mammoth 497 runs, Baroda were trailing by 127 runs with three wickets in hand in the first innings at stumps on Day 3. Saurabh Wakaskar’s 172, kept the hosts in reckoning even as Samiullah Beigh and Umar Nazir kept the home team from building partnerships with wickets at regular intervals. Both claimed two wickets each while Parvez Rasool and Ram Dayal have picked a wicket apiece to keep the balance tipped in the visitors favour. When play ended on the third day, Baroda were 370/7 with Pinal Shah and Sagar Manglorkar at the crease.

Railways vs Karnataka: Railways lost the remaining six wickets for the addition of 66 runs to their overnight total of 105 earlier in the day. Sreenath Aravind (4/43) and Abhimanyu Mithun ran through the hosts line-up for 171 and seize a first innings lead. Adding to the lead, Karnataka were 131/1 at stumps on the third day with a healthy 207-run lead. Although Mayank Agarwal was sent back for zero by Anureet Singh, Robin Uthappa (70*) and Karun Nair (61*) carried the innings forward till the end of day’s play.

Tamil Nadu vs Madhya Pradesh: Following on, Tamil Nadu were trailing by 32 runs with seven wickets in hand at their home ground against MP. After performing with the bat, Jalaj Saxena claimed five wickets and helped bowl TN out for 248. Saxena who had claimed a wicket yesterday while Ankit Sharma had claimed three to leave the hosts on 112/4 on the second day ran through the batting lineup on the third day. After enforcing the follow on the duo struck again to leave TN on 152/3 at stumps on Day 3.

Uttar Pradesh vs Mumbai: Powered by the lower-order, Mumbai seized a first innings lead against UP before being bowled out on the third day. After claiming six wickets, Shardul Thakur returned to score 87 while Shreyas Iyer made 75 after five batsmen returned with single digit scores. UP were seven without loss of wicket and trailing by 57 runs at the end of day’s play in Kanpur.

Delhi vs Rajasthan: Delhi resumed their innings on 201/3 on the third day and declared it on 380/6 with a 239-run first innings lead. Unmukt Chand’s 146 complemented by three half-centuries from the middle-order helped the hosts to a commanding position. In reply Rajasthan were 78/2 in the second innings at stumps and trailing by 161 runs.

Haryana vs Vidarbha: Haryana managed to clinch a marginal two runs first innings lead before being bowled out for 156 on the third day. Resuming on 60/2 the batting lineup folded without much resistance on Tuesday. Ravi Thakur claimed 4/38 and wrapped-up the lower-order while Swapnil Bandiwar picked three wickets. At stumps Vidarbha were 23/2 with Ganesh Satish and S Badrinath in the middle. Mohit Sharma and Joginder Sharma had accounted for both the Vidarbha openers.

Maharashtra vs Punjab: Punjab were bowled out for 391 earlier on the third day. Having conceded the first innings lead, Maharashtra were 259/3 at stumps. Kedar Jadhav had taken the team to a 78-run lead with a century. He was batting on 109 with Rahul Tripathi on 59 at the end of day’s play in Pune.

Saurashtra vs Gujarat: 280/3 at stumps on the third day, Saurashtra were leading by 239 runs with seven wickets in hand in the second innings. Sheldon Jackson was batting on 124 with Jaydev Shah on 17 when play ended in Rajkot on Tuesday evening. The hosts had conceded a first innings lead to Gujarat yesterday.

Goa vs Himachal Pradesh: 370/9 in the first innings at stumps on the third day, HP had taken a 20-run lead against Goa. After resuming his innings on 88 on Day 3, Ankit Kalsi went on to post 115 before he was sent back by Gauresh Gawas. In addition to the century by the top-order batsman R Parida’s 88 followed by useful double-digit contributions by the lower middle-order helped the visitors to seize a lead with a day remaining in the match.

Jharkhand vs Tripura: Jharkhand were trailing by 93 runs with five wickets in hand against Tripura with a day remaining in the match. Tripura’s MB Murasingh and A sarakar ran through the top-order while V Saha claimed one to keep the opposition on the back foot. At stumps Jharkhand were 127/5. Earlier Tripura were bowled out for 362 after resuming on 227/6 in the morning. Shahbaz Nadeem claimed 4/68 in the innings.

Kerala vs Hyderabad: An unbeaten double century by Sachin Baby helped Kerala to a handsome first innings lead before declaring their innings on 447/7 on the third day. At the end of day’s play Hyderabad were 4/0 in the second innings and trailing by 173 runs.

Services vs Andhra: After resuming their first innings on 53/1 on Day 3, Services were trailing by 20 runs with six wickets in hand at stumps. Rajat Paliwal and Yashpal Singh rallied on to help the team to 218 until the latter was out. Singh’s departure for 57 signalled close of play for the day. Paliwal was batting on 72 when play was called off.
