Having already lost the series, India were hoping to salvage some pride and try new combinations ahead of the ODI series, but there hopes were dashed out as the match had to be abandoned with a ball being bowled in Kolkata.

The Eden Gardens endured a lot a rain before the scheduled start of play and the ground had to be covered. Despite rain stopping and groundsmen working tirelessly the play couldn’t start and the match was called off.

Umpires inspected the ground thrice, and didn’t find the conditions fit to play, especially the edges near the boundary lines, the area which was not protected by covers.

There was. however, was a slight chance of a five-over-a-side game but that too didn’t happen as the umpires deemed the playing conditions unfit, despite no rain for more than four hours.

Meanwhile, the Proteas clinched the three-match T20 series 2-0 by comprehensively winning the first two rubbers of the series in Dharamsala and Cuttack.

The five-match ODI series will start from October 11 in Kanpur’s Green Park stadium, followed by games in Indore, Rajkot, Chennai and Mumbai.
