India vs Sri Lanka Highlight: See Suresh Raina’s special feat and milestones made in 1st ODI

This match was the 400th ODI on Indian soil. India became only the second country to host 400 ODIs after Australia. Suresh Raina was playing his 200th ODI. He became 12th Indian to reach this mark (including Zaheer Khan who has played 194 ODIs for India and 6 for Asia XI).

This match was the 145th between India and Sri Lanka. No other two teams have played this often against each other in ODIs as Sri Lanka- India have played. After leading India in 12 ODIs – all outside India – Virat Kohli was captaining India for the first time on Indian soil.

Rahane Dhawan

Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan provided the sixth instance of both Indian openers scoring a hundred in the same match. This was the second such instance against Sri Lanka. The 231-run partnership between Rahane and Dhawan is India’s fourth opening partnership in excess of 200.

The Rahane-Dhawan partnership is the highest opening partnership for India in India. The pair obliterated the previous record stand of 196 between Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag against West Indies at Rajkot in 2002.

The above partnership just failed to beat the highest opening stand on Indian soil, which is still held by South Africa’s Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs at Kochi in 2000.

Suresh Raina, on 44, completed his 5000 ODI runs. He became 11th Indian to accomplish this feat. Incidentally Raina is the slowest among Indians to reach this mark, taking 172 innings. Mohammad Azharuddin held the previous record with 170 innings.

India’s total (363-5) is their third joint highest total against Sri Lanka. It is also the highest in 17 ODIs at Cuttack, expunging 301 for 3 made by India against Zimbabwe in 1998.

This was the 20th time India scored 350 or more in an ODI – most by any side. They are followed by South Africa (14) and Australia (12).

Upul Tharanga, on 21, completed 1000 ODI runs against India. He became ninth Sri Lankan to do so. Mahela Jayawardene, on 33, completed 2500 ODI runs against India, thus becoming third Sri Lankan to reach this milestone after Sanath Jayasuriya (2899) and Kumar Sangakkara (2639).

Ishant Sharma (4-34) achieved his best figures in ODIs, bettering 4 for 38 against Australia at Melbourne in 2008. Incidentally it was the fifth time Ishant took a four-wicket haul in ODIs.

India’s 169-run win is their second biggest in terms of run-margin against Sri Lanka, after their 183-run win at Johannesburg in 2003.

Indian opening pair scored 37 runs more than what whole Sri Lanka team managed. This is only the sixth time opening partnership for India scored more than opponents’ total (where the opponents were all-out). The difference of 37 runs is the second most.

Virat Kohli has now won 10 matches out of 13 in which he has captained India – a win percentage of 76.92. Among all Indians who have captained in 10 or more ODIs, Kohli’s win-percentage is the highest
