Mominul and Kayes played well for their half-centuries, but they would be kicking themselves for failing to convert the start on a day, which entirely belonged to Bangladesh right from the start.

Bangladesh, after electing to bat first, made a solid start with Kayes and Tamim Iqbal as they made a 52-run partnership. The remaining batsmen capitalized on the solid foundation and the hosts ended the opening day on 236/4.

“I think we are in a good position, but if I had not been out we would have been on top,” Mominul said after the day’s play. “Surviving here is easy, but scoring runs is difficult.”

Mahmudullah, meanwhile, showed a lot of grit and determination for his 49, but he was dismissed by pacer Wahab Riaz on the penultimate ball of the day. All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan remained unbeaten, as the umpired called it stumps after Mahmudullah’s departure.

The day could have been much different, but Pakistan dropped a truckload of chances that came their way. Riaz, Mohammed Hafeez, Zulfiqar Babar and Yasir Shah finished with a wicket apiece.

Pakistan would be hoping for a much-better performance in this two-match Test series, after facing humiliating defeat in the ODIs and one-off T20.

“Obviously after picking Mominul’s wicket we are happy,” he said. “It has raised the team’s spirits and hopefully we can dismiss them early tomorrow.”
