The officials from both the BCCI and the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in Delhi on Tuesday announced the dates of  Afghanistan inaugural Test to be played in India for the first time.

Afghanistan will play their inaugural Test between June 14 and 18 in Bengaluru against India.

The Chief Executive Officer, ACB, Shafiq Stanikzai said that our strategic objective is to be on the competitive side of the game.

” It’s going to be a tough challenge. We will try to put our best game. It’s going to be a good preparation game for the Indian team  before England tour,” Stanikzai said.

Before the Test, Afghanistan will play a warm-up match, most likely a three-day game, the schedule for which will be announced later.

Chairman, Afghanistan Cricket Board, Atif Mashal expressed that the game of cricket has added a layer to an invaluable relationship between two countries.

“We are thankful to BCCI for accepting our request to provide ACB officials with another home ground, in addition to Greater Noida, in India. Final details about this agreement will be announced tomorrow,” said Mashal.

In December last year, the Indian board agreed to host Afghanistan’s debut Test. The match will be played one year after Afghanistan were inducted as a Full Member by the ICC – along with Ireland – in June 2017.

Cricket is shaping very well in Afghanistan. The Afghanistan U19 Cricket team recently registered a second win over Sri Lanka today over Pakistan. The ACB recently also announced the launch of Afghanistan Premier League (APL) in Kabul. Mashal, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with executing partner, Snixer Sport.

Brief History of Afghanistan Cricket

The Afghanistan national cricket team is the 12th Test cricket playing Full Member nation. Cricket has been played in Afghanistan since the mid 19th century, but it is only in recent years that the national team has become successful. The Afghanistan Cricket Board was formed in 1995 and became an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2001 and a member of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in 2003.

After nearly a decade of playing top class international cricket, on 22 June 2017, full ICC membership (Test status) was granted to Afghanistan, taking the number of Test cricket playing nations to twelve.
