On Wednesday night in the first ODI at Kochi, India received a jolt. Not many expected the West Indies to put up such a dominating performance against the world champions at home. The visitors made it clear that they were no pushovers as India suffered a huge loss in the series opener. India’s only bright spot in that loss was Shikhar Dhawan showing glimpses of form constructing a patient half century in the mammoth run-chase. For Dhawan it was all about learning from his failures of the past.

“My failures have been a learning process for me,” Dhawan said. “I try to enjoy success and failures equally. If I am not going to see failures then I won’t realise the taste of success. It is important in life to experience failures so that you realise the importance of success better. I am glad if I failed in six innings because I know that those six innings will only help me get 50 good innings. I am getting better with every game,” he added.
Each time Dhawan walks out to bat you expect the scoring rate to click at a brisk pace. Afterall he had hogged the limelight and burst into the international scene because of his explosive batting skills. Dhawan assured that there would be no change in his batting style even if it comes at the cost of losing his wicket.

“I have not changed the way I play. The team and support staff have backed me to play my natural game and backed me during my rough patch. I know the same shots that get you runs will also get you out. I used to try and modify that aspect of my game earlier but now I am mature enough to understand my process.

With more games and exposure it was all about fine tuning and adding new facets of batting to the skill set according to Dhawan. “You keep fine tuning your skills as and when you keep playing games for your side. My basics are still the same but you do learn a few things and add those things to your game. I am working on the mental aspect of my game as well and figuring out ways to disturb bowlers. Such things come from experience and maturity.”

Dhawan has often been found wanting against spin bowling off-late and there was a definite effort to play adequate spin bowling at the nets. Assistant coach Sanjay Bangar was seen working closely on that front with the left-hander as Dhawan tried to play spin bowling to the best of his abilities. Some hit the middle, he swept a few and missed out narrowly on the rest. “I feel I am playing spin bowling better and have been practicing on that aspect of my game. It is not that I don’t get out to spinners now. Earlier I used to get LBW to them and now I get bowled,” Dhawan joked.

Saturday will be a kind of home coming for Dhawan as he gears up to play in front of his home crowd for the first time since donning the India cap. “I am really happy to play my first match as an India player at my home ground. It is a good feeling to play in front of the Delhi crowd and it is going to be a dream come true for me tomorrow. I am looking forward to it.”
