Former England skipper Kevin Pietersen has predicted a close Ashes series battle, saying it won’t be a lopsided contest this time around.

Pietersen, who is currently playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), said Australia would have slight advantage over the hosts, but the visitors will be tested in the English conditions.

“The Ashes is going to be very close, much closer than we think,” Pietersen said. “Australia have the edge in certain areas but it’s not going to be three, four or five nil.”

“I’ve gone for two-one to Australia but English conditions will help England and Australia will be tested,” he added. “The Dukes ball is totally different from the Kookaburra.”

The 1st Ashes Test will commence on July 8 at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens, and England have announced their 13-member squad for the opening Test against Australia.

Pietersen reckoned that England’s top players – James Anderson, Alastair Cook and Joe Root – are required to step up in the five-match series.

“England have some key players in Root, Anderson and Alastair Cook.” Pietersen said. “They all have to have an amazing series because, if they don’t, then we’re in trouble, whereas Australia have a lot of depth in their side.”
