Chetan Sharma on 1st day’s play of Nottingham Test

The first day of the Nottingham test clearly showcased how interesting the series is going to be between the two sides. After winning the toss, and electing to bat on a batting friendly wicket, it looked as if Indian batsmen would be able to dominate the home team’s bowling despite losing an early wicket of Shikhar Dhawan to James Anderson.  However, it didn’t happen and Indian skipper MS Dhoni would still not be fully convinced with his team’s batting performance which could have been much better despite the score board reading 259 for four at the end of first day’s play.

Except for Murali Vijay, there was no other Indian batsmen who was able to build on the start they got. Shikhar Dhawan returned to the dressing room early, and then Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, who despite reaching in 30s weren’t able to get big scores for themselves. Had it not been Murali Vijay’s gritty knock of 122, India would have found itself in deep trouble on the first day itself. Full credit to Murali Vijay here, who not only played a savior knock for his team at the right time but also proved that he has the right technique and temperament to open the innings in the longer format of the game in any given condition. Throughout his innings, he remained calm, composed, and, more importantly, aggressive enough to take on the English bowling, which I always believe is essential to succeed in places like England. Credit should also be given to the Indian captain, MS Dhoni, who came into bat after tea with four wickets down and still managed to get his half-century in only 64 balls. Both the batsmen have now brought India into a situation where a first innings total of 400 looks achievable and respectable enough to put pressure on the home team.

England can take relief from the fact that they have been able to send back visitor’s four important batsmen. However, the indomitable partnership between Dhoni and Vijay would give them a sleepless night ! It will be interesting to see how the first session of Day 2 turns out to be as it will be crucial for both the teams and could change the face of the Nottingham Test.
