The Competition Commission of India (CCI) fined Rs. 52.24 crores to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for anti-competitive practices with respect to IPL (Indian Premier League) media rights on wednesday. This is 2nd time when Competition Commission of India (CCI) has fined Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), previously it was in done in the year 2013.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has clearly mentioned that the impugned clause in the IPL media rights agreements has been perceived by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to protect the commercial interests of the bidders of broadcasting rights as well as economic interest of BCCI.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has made a 44-page order in which it shows that the penalty of Rs.52.24 crores is nearly to 4.48% of the average of the BCCI’s relevant turnover during the last three financial years. The average turnover for the last three years i.e. 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 is Rs.1, 164.7 crores.

Although the penalty amount of Rs.52.24 crores remained same in February 2013 and November 2017 because the regulator preferred to maintain the same penalty. The average relevant turnover is slightly higher this year as compared to the year 2013 but still the penalty amount remained same.
