Dwayne Bravo opened the innings for West Indies for only third time in his ODI career. The last such instance was in 2008 (vs Sri Lanka at Port-of-Spain).

Marlon Samuels (126*) scored his sixth ODI hundred-second against India. Samuels’ innings is the highest by any batsman in nine matches at Kochi, bettering Gary Kirsten’s 115 for South Africa against India in 2000.

During his innings Samuels completed his 4,000 runs in ODIs. He became 10th West Indies batsman to do so. Samuels has taken most innings (150) among the West Indies players to accomplish this feat. Carl Hooper was the previous slowest with 147 innings.

Samuels also completed his 1,000 runs against India in ODIs. He became eighth West Indies batsman to do so after Desmond Haynes (1357), S Chanderpaul (1319), Ramnaresh Sarwan (1296), Carl Hooper (1279), Chris Gayle (1220), Gordon Greenidge (1181) and Brian Lara (1142).

Samuels has now made eight fifty-plus scores against India in India. Only one batsman- Ricky Ponting (9) – has scored more.

Denesh Ramdin (61) scored his third fifty against India. Incidentally Ramdin holds the record of highest score by a West Indies wicketkeeper against India with 96 at Indore in 2011. In fact the top three ODI scores by a West Indies wicketkeeper against any country have all come from Ramdin’s bat!

The fourth wicket partnership of 165 runs between Samuels and Ramdin is West Indies’ best for fourth wicket against India. The pair surpassed the previous record stand of 149 between Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul at Rajkot in 2002.

The above partnership just failed to beat the highest fourth wicket partnership against India in India, which still remains 168 between Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik for Pakistan at Jaipur in 2007.

West Indies’ total of 321 for six was their fourth highest against India. Interestingly all these four top scores have come on Indian soil!

Mohammed Shami (4-66) took his third four-wicket haul in ODIs. Shami’s figures are now the second most expensive by an Indian picking up a four-wicket haul. Ashish Nehra had conceded 72 runs against Pakistan at Visakhapatnam in 2005.

Shami has now taken 62 wickets in his 34 ODIs. Only one Indian bowler – Ajit Agarkar – had taken more wickets (66) in his first 34 matches. Shami has now become the leading wicket-taker in ODIs in 2014, moving ahead of Lasith Malinga’s tally of 29 wickets.

The win by 124 runs was West Indies’ second biggest by run-margin over India after 135-run win at Vijaywada in 2002. West Indies have now beaten India by a margin of 100 runs or more on five occasions. On all five occasions they were put in to bat first by Indian captains!
