When these two teams locked horns last time, England faced a whitewash and were left beaten and bruised. This time it looks unlikely seeing their recent form at home, in particular.

“That has gone, you cannot keep harping on about it,” England captain Alastair Cook said. “If you went back five months before that we won 3-0 in our own conditions.”

“You have to be very careful not to read into all that stuff,” he added. “It’s a brand new challenge. It’s not what about what happened two years ago it’s about what’s happening now.”

Meanwhile, Australia is having a good season – they won the World Cup and then thrashed West Indies in the Caribbean. But, beating England in England would be a tough task for them.

The injury and then retirement of Ryan Harris has also not done anything good for them, Pat Cummins has filled in for him, but Australia would be missing his services dearly.

Despite Harris’ absence, Australia have a scary pace attack, featuring Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Johnson and Josh Hazlewood. Nathan Lyon is also capable of extracting bounce and troubling the opponent.

Lyon could play a vital role as the game progresses seeing the weather might heat up. But, the toss would be interesting as there is a fair covering of grass on the pitch and the conditions are overcast.

“It’s been difficult. Obviously we know which way we want to go and it will become clearer on day one at the toss,” Australia coach Darren Lehmann said. “We’re really happy where everyone’s at and there are some really tight calls.”

“And that’s a good problem to have because you want everyone fighting for their spot,” he added. “We’ve got some great depth and we want those guys performing. And if you’re not performing, then obviously there’s someone waiting to take your spot.”

England: Alastair Cook (c), Adam Lyth, Gary Ballance, Ian Bell, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler (wk), Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood and James Anderson.

Australia: David Warner, Chris Rogers, Steven Smith, Michael Clarke (c), Adam Voges, Shane Watson, Brad Haddin (wk), Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon.
