Steve Smith’s penchant for India bowling isn’t a new phenomenon. Be it at home or away from home, the Australian captain has always had the better of the Indians. Therefore, Smith starting the Indian tour with a century wasn’t anything unexpected. Against a docile India A attack, Smith made a point that he is here to make a mark.

Even in the past and before he was the player in the Australian set up, he made a mark in India while playing the IPL. He could do anything with bat. Something, which Virat Kohli has been doing off late.

Smith could plays all kinds of cricketing shot with utmost ease without even championed the cause of handling the India spinners at will. He came across as a complete player.

And, his rise as a cricketer was enhanced when India traveled to Australia last time in 2014-15 tour. Smith could do no wrong. When he took guard, he finished only after scoring a century. He was Team India No. 1 nemesis. Everyone talked about how a young team under Smith has already made a mark in world cricket.

Unfortunately, Australia couldn’t sustain the same level of supremacy under Smith’s captaincy for a long. Despite a few failures, the team and the Cricket Australia stood behind Smith and let go the critical phase. There was also a little choice in front of the Australian selectors who didn’t have a player to match Smith’s stature.

Now that Australia are back to achieve the final frontier and against the best team in the world, the challenges are even higher. Fortunately, Smith hasn’t lost his bit of batting steadily in the face of adversity.

He also has David Warner, who is a batsman of different class and completely fearless in his approach. Together, they make a lethal combination. But will the Smith-Warner pair make a difference? Time will perhaps answer that.

Right now, the Aussies are warming up to counter the Indian attack, and Smith has indeed looked in good touch in the practice game. We will see more of Smith when the four-match Test behind from February 23 in Pune.
