What happens to the Indian team’s opening combination when a fit again Murali Vijay comes in the next Test series. There is no answer to this problem. Since his replacement, Shikhar Dhawan, has been pretty consistent lately.
Going by the current trend of the team, Dhawan would have to sit out despite his superlative performance. Perhaps, Kohli would be forced to say “Hard luck, Shikhar, you have to make way for Vijay.”
However, there could be more than meets the eye. Who knows, by that time Dhawan would have enhanced his reputation as a opener in shorter version of the game. Like he batted in the entire Champions Trophy.
It eventually helped him to win back his place in Test team. Who knows, the Delhi dasher could collect more runs in next two to three months and that may help him to retain his place in the playing XI.

All said and done, KL Rahul has become the No. 1 opening choice for India. Therefore it would be important for both Dhawan and Vijay would have to keep competing with each other to fulfill the choice of second opener.
There is also a thought process in the team that all these openers need to be in good form in the coming months. This is because India is slated to travel to South Africa, England, Australia and New Zealand.
By chance, if Dhawan would have to make way for Vijay, it can’t be treated as a heart-break for him. Because, India would be playing several Test matches away from home and if Dhawan would continue to score runs consistently.
He would certain get his chance to prove his worth in challenging conditions. As of now, let’s all soak in Dhawan’s success and hope that he continues to bat effortless for India.
