Axar Patel could make his Test debut in Pallekele against Sri Lanka on August 12. The left-arm spinner has found place in the Indian squad for the upcoming 3rd Test in place of allrounder Ravindra Jadeja.
Jadeja, meanwhile, was suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after the 2nd Test. This is because he had accumulated too many demerit points. He, however, will remain available for the limited-overs series.
Patel, on the other hand, is not a like-to-like replacement for Jadeja. But, still, he is a handy allrounder. He, however, will have to face a tough competition from Kuldeep Yadav, who is also aiming for a place in the playing XI.
“Axar is someone who can do a Jadeja with the bat too,” a team source informed. “Though he averages just 14.16 and has a highest score of 38 in ODIs. The left-hander, though, has some decent knocks in domestic cricket.”
India Squad for 3rd Test: Virat Kohli (c), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, W Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, M Shami, Kuldeep Yadav and Abhinav Mukund
