Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has insisted that MS Dhoni has a big role to play in the Champions Trophy. India will be aiming to defend the Champions Trophy, starting in June, in the United Kingdom.
Ponting said that India’s middle-order will have a big role to play in the eight-team tournament. The Aussie legend then added that Dhoni will be a vital cog in holding the middle-order together in England’s testing conditions.
“I think he can be an important player in that Indian team, especially with his experience,” Ponting said. “Batting in the middle order, he’s someone who can really control a one-day innings.”
“And that might be what you need in England,” he added. “If the ball does a bit early on, there’s a chance India could lose top-order wickets and you’d need someone in the middle order to guide the ship.”
Dhoni is currently adjusting to his life post captaincy. He has captained the Indian team for more than a decade. India’s most successful captain, meanwhile, has also faced criticism for his performance in the IPL.
“Things can turn around in this game pretty quickly and one thing I’ve learned in this game with champion players is to never write them off. They always find a way to keep coming back,” Ponting said.
