Ranji Trophy Quarterfinal Round-up: Shardul Thakur claims fifer for Mumbai

While Shardul Thakur claimed five wickets and ran out Virender Sehwag for 49 to keep Delhi in check, Akhil Herwadkar’s half-century has kept Mumbai in the fray. In the game against Andhra, Maharashtra’s Kedar Jadhav put up a fight and was batting on 81 at stumps. In the match against Vidarbha, Baba Indrajith made 97 on Day-two to help Tamil Nadu to a formidable total. Here are the highlights for the day:

Andhra vs Maharashtra: Maharashtra were leading by 125 runs with four wickets in hand in the second innings at stumps. While S Gugale was sent back for zero with just one run on the board, his opening partner Harshad Khaiwale scored a fighting 47. And although Chirag Khurana added a valuable 23 on the green-top wicket, it was Kedar Jadhav’s 81* that has kept Maharashtra in the reckoning. Siva Kumar (three wickets) and CV Stephen (two wickets) wrecked the middle-order like they had in the previous innings. Adding to Maharashtra’s woes, R Tripathi retied hurt without opening his account. However, Jadhav has taken the side to 172/6 at the end of day’s play. Anupam Sanklecha was at the crease with the middle-order bat when play ended for the day.

Earlier in the day, Andhra were bowled out for 138 with 47-run first innings lead after resuming on 87/3 in the morning. The trio of Anupam Sanklecha (4/45), Samad Fallah (3/45) and DJ Muthuswamy (2/16) wrapped the side up in 63.3 overs.

Assam vs Karnataka: Resuming on 302/2 Karnataka added 150 runs to their overnight total before being bowled out on the second day. Krishan Das claimed four while Pallav Kumar Das and Arup Das chipped in with a wicket each on Tuesday to bowl Karnataka out for 452. CM Gautam was stranded on 44 as wickets crumbled at the other end. At stumps, Assam were trailing by 394 runs with seven wickets in hand. Shreyas Gopal claimed two while Sreenath Aravind took one wicket. The team was 58/3 at the end of day’s play with Gokul Sharma and KB Arun Karthik in the middle.

Delhi vs Mumbai: Mumbai were leading by 67 runs with nine wickets in hand in the second innings at stumps in Cuttack. Anchoring the innings, Akhil Herwadkar (52*) had taken the side to 87/1 with Shreyas Iyer (12*) until the end of day’s play. Opening the innings, skipper Aditya Tare made 23 in the 41-run opening stand before being sent back by Pradeep Sangwan.

Earlier, Delhi prodded to a 10-run first innings lead before being bowled out for 166. The Shardul Thakur-led attack ran through the line-up after Delhi resumed on 20/1 on the second morning. While Virendra Sehwag was run out for 49 by Thakur, the Mumbai pacer also claimed 5/54 to keep the Gautam Gambhir-led side in check. While Wilkin Mota claimed the key wicket of Gautam Gambhir and Shivam Sahrma, BS Sandhu, who had accounted for Unmukt Chand yesterday also sent back R Yadav. Rajat Bhatia remained unbeaten on 12.

Tamil Nadu vs Vidarbha: Tamil Nadu were bowled out for 402 earlier on the second day after resuming on 234/4. V Shankar completed his century after resuming his innings on 90. He was trapped lbw for 111 by Rakesh Dhruve, who finished with three wickets. Baba Indrajith however was bowled three runs short of his century by R Jangid. Vidarbha were nine without loss at the end of day’s play and trail by 393 runs.
