Prime Minister Narendra Modi has voiced his opinion on shifting Indian Premier League matches out of Maharashtra. The PM questioned the logic behind shifting of matches.
Modi blamed media for creating a furore out of the situation. The Prime Minister sarcastically said that whosoever came up with this solution of countering drought should be lauded.
“Wherever there are stadiums, even if matches are played or not, water needs to be supplied for the grounds maintenance for 365 days,” the Prime Minister pointed out.
“But somehow the entire bought into the incredible philosophy that that if the match is not played then the water supply to the ground stops automatically,” he added.
The Bombay High Court had order to shift all IPL matches out of the drought-hit Maharashtra. Due to which Rising Pune Supergiants and Mumbai Indians had to play their matches at neutral venues.
A very few people had voiced their opinions against the issue at that time, as the argument seemed valid. According to reports, as many as 28,000 villages in Maharashtra are hit by drought.
Pune captain MS Dhoni was one of those who pointed out the lack of foresightedness. “If you see, all these questions are good to hear. I think for us it’s more important to seek long-term solutions,” Dhoni had said.
Even then BCCI secretary, Anurag Thakur had said that only treated water will be used during matches. He had also said that IPL’s requirement wasn’t much as the league will be using just “0.00038 per cent of water”.
