Hit by controversies, one after another, the Indian Premier League might be played outside India, next year. The IPL Governing Council is contemplating hosting the event outside the country.

The secretory of the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI), Anurag Thakur, hinted that the council is looking for possible venues outside India for the IPL 2017.

“The IPL governing council will be looking at the venues in India and abroad,” Thakur said. “We have to check the availability of the venues and prevailing conditions.”

Since the first season, the IPL has been under scrutiny, and had been played outside India twice in the past. In 2009, the league was played in South Africa, while UAE hosted the first leg of the event in 2014.

This season, the league has been forced to move 12 matches out of Maharashtra, which is facing water crises, after orders from the Bombay High Court.

The matches in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur have been moved out of the state, and are likely to take place in Jaipur and Visakhapatnam.

Earlier, Aniruddh Chaudhary, BCCI treasurer, had hinted that the tournament might be moved out, which would lead in the loss of GDP.
