The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) has rubbished reports that MS Dhoni was asked to leave the captaincy. A national daily reported that the board had asked Dhoni to leave the captaincy of the limited-overs team.

MSK Prasad clarified in a statement that it was Dhoni’s personal decision to leave the captaincy. The chairman of selectors further added that MSD informed him about the decision during Jharkhand’s Ranji Trophy match.

“There was no pressure on Dhoni to resign from captaincy,” MSK Prasad clarified. “It was his personal decision. He informed me during the Ranji Trophy semifinal between Jharkhand and Gujarat in Nagpur.”

Prasad also hailed Dhoni for taking a bold decision of leaving the captaincy. He termed it perfectly-timed, as it will give Virat Kohli ample time to prepare for the Champions Trophy in the United Kingdom.

“Dhoni is an honest man and the decision didn’t come as a surprise,” the chairman of the selectors said. “It was timed perfectly as Kohli needs enough matches to settle down going into the Champions Trophy.”

“I thank Dhoni for his contribution,” he added. “But, his job doesn’t end here and he needs to guide Kohli.”
