The central government has cleared the name of MS Dhoni for the Padma Awards, according to reports. Dhoni has already received Padma Shri award in 2009. He is likely to receive the Padma Award this time around.
However, the Home Ministry hasn’t specified the Padma category. The awards will be given on the Republic Day.
Dhoni is India’s most successful captain across formats. He has won all major ICC tournaments, 2007 World T20, 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. He also has most wins as a Test captain for India.
MSD has recently stepped down from the captaincy of the limited-overs squad. He has retired from Test cricket in 2014. Dhoni recently hit a century and helped the Indian team in winning the series against England.
Apart from Dhoni, Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and her coach Pullela Gopichand will also receive Padma Awards.
