They say attack is the best form of defence. And who knows it better than KL Rahul, who cracked a superb Test match hundred, his second overall in his short career.

Most importantly, it was his partnership of 166 runs with Indian captain Virat Kohli for the third wicket that gave India a stomach to show some fight in second Test match against Sri Lanka at the P Sara Oval on Thursday.

Earlier, KL Rahul was fortunate to have been survived, but he backed himself to accumulate 108 runs. After losing the Galle Test match to the Sri Lankan spinners, Rahul has been helped India to script India’s strong reply.

The best part of his knock was the way he used the length and width of the crease to counter the Rangana Herath and Co. At time, he played a few pre-determined shots, missed quite a lot of juicy half-volleys at the start of the innings, but always made an attempt to get close to the pitch of the ball.

For KL Rahul, batting wasn’t like putting the bat on the ball. It was also about pacing his knock without rushing into things. Before the team break on the opening day when Rahul was just close to his hundred, he looked to be in a great hurry to complete the formality. But in reality, it was just an impression. He waited till it happened after the tea break.

Incidentally, Kohli too put up a sizzling show. Just when he was set to get his 13th hundred, a brilliant catch by Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews off Herath cut short his stay in the middle.

As long as he was there at the crease, Kohli did what he does the best. The Indian captain played shots all over the wicket and didn’t try to play the sweep shot, which he is yet to master.
