Afghanistan were humbled by India in their inaugural Test match in Bengaluru earlier this week. There was a lot of anticipation around their debut but what followed was an abject surrender by them against a more superior and the World number 1 Test side. Though many believed that they will improve in the near future and backed them to learn from this experience. However, the former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev wants the BCCI to allow Afghanistan players to feature in Duleep Trophy to help them improve in the longest format of the game.
Their batsmen lacked the much-needed patience as they were bundled out twice in two sessions only on the second day of the game. They could only resist for 65 overs combined in both the innings which proved there is a long way to go for them in the whites. Meanwhile, their bowling impressed many which found its groove late on the first day.
BCCI has played a crucial role in Afghanistan’s rise as they have lent a helping hand to them. A special ground has been dedicated for their players to practice in Noida and now many feel that the board should encourage them to improve in Test cricket which is known as the traditional format of the game.
Playing against domestic teams will help them :
Kapil Dev, while speaking to Mid-day, suggested the BCCI to allow Afghanistan‘s players to play in Duleep Trophy which will only help them improve in the Test cricket. He also showered praises on them for their quick rise in the game and felt that they shouldn’t be demoralised after the stinging loss at the hands of the Indian team.
“Let them participate in the Duleep Trophy as it will prepare them for Test cricket. Playing against quality domestic teams will help them develop confidence. The BCCI has been very encouraging towards Afghanistan by letting them use our facilities and grounds. I feel this will be an important step towards developing their confidence for the longer format,” he said.
“Afghanistan have played exceptionally well in limited overs cricket. This was a new experience and they shouldn’t get demoralised with the result. They are quick learners and I am sure with a little support and encouragement, they will live up to Test standards,” the captain of the 1983 World Cup winning team added.
