Indian Cricket Board Puts ‘Mini IPL’ Plans on Hold

The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) has stalled plans of organising a ‘Mini IPL’ in the United States. Anurag Thakur, the BCCI president, has confirmed that the league will not take place in September.

India recently played a two-match T20 series against the West Indies in the United States. Taking cue out of the series, the Indian Board has decided to put the series on hold.

The time difference is a major hindrance in organising a small IPL-like tournament in the States.

“I think we must understand the time difference. IPL is seen in India from 7 o’clock to 11 or 11.30 at night,” Thakur said. “So you have to play somewhere in the east coast here so (that) the timing matches.”

“If we have to play in the day here, the matches should be seen in India at night because broadcasting is a big thing,” he added. “So you can’t make your home fan lose (by) playing outside India.”

“So which are the provinces you can play in United States? That’s a big task,” the BCCI president concluded.

The BCCI earlier wanted to organise the ‘Mini IPL’ in September ahead of the New Zealand series. It wasn’t finalised though, and was subject to approval from franchisees and broadcaster.
