India made a good start with the ball, and dismissed both the English openers. The Indians first removed Keaton Jennings and then Alastair Cook to reduce the visitors to 68/2 in the morning session.
England had Moeen Ali (7 not out) and Joe Root (44 out out) in the middle when the lunch was taken on Day 1. The duo had stitched an unbeaten 47-run partnership for the third wicket, but the scoring rate remained slow.

Earlier, England decided to bat first in Chepauk. But, their decision soon backfired when comeback man Ishant Sharma dismissed Jennings (1). The English opener chased an overpitched ball only to edge it to Parthiv Patel.
Meanwhile, Cook’s (10) horror run continued as got dismissed once again by Ravindra Jadeja. The England captain failed to read Jadeja, and edge one to Virat Kohli, who took a good catch to his left.
England didn’t lose any more wickets in the session, but they also failed to score freely. Both Ali and Root looked solid against the Indian bowlers, who kept it tight throughout the first session at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
