India vs England 2nd T20: Hosts Shouldn’t Play on Slow Tracks

India’s decision to play the T20 match on spin-friendly track backfired. The hosts had to bite the dust in the series opener. To start with, India lost the toss and wickets in quick succession after they were put to bat.

Still after the 10th over of the match, India were in the game on a score of 75 at the loss of three wickets. But England bowlers slowed things down, especially, Moeen Ali was just remarkable with his off-spins.

At the end of the game, it was Ali’s economical spell, which also had two scalps, restricted India to a chaseable score of 147 by T20 standards. Rest they say is history. England openers were off to a flying start.

By the time they got out, the visitors were in complete command and had to just play without exerting any pressure. There was absolutely no pressure to take any risk, as England rounded up the match with 11 balls to spare.

So where did India go wrong? Virat Kohli and his men didn’t get that much score and the experienced spin attack of Yuzvendra Chahal and Parvez Rasool didn’t do much good to India’s attack.

Chahal’s two quick wickets raised the hope of India’s win for a while. But, England captain Eoin Morgan and Joe Root destroyed all that. England are right now one-up in the series and looking good for the next game in Nagpur.

So, where can India improve? It’s more or less certain that if India won’t make any change in their line-up in the bowling front, no score would be competitive enough for England.

India can also do away with the strategy of not playing the T20 game on slow wickets. Most of the Indian batsmen are genuine stroke-makers, right from KL Rahul, Kohli, Yuvraj Singh to MS Dhoni.

If they are made to bat on slower wickets, it’s certainly not the best of strategy. In other word, if India wish to level the series in Nagpur, they would have to out-bat their opposition like the did in Test and ODI series.
