Australia managed to survive through the last session, just. Mitchell Starc frustrated the Indians on Day 1 in Pune with his gritty fifty. He also stitched a 51-run partnership with Josh Hazlewood for the 10th wicket.
At stumps, on Day 1, Australia were 256/9, with Starc (57 not out) and Hazlewood (1 not out) in the middle. Their partnership lifted the Australian team to stability, which at one point of time looked unlikely.

The Indians picked nine wickets after the lunch. Pacer Umesh Yadav led India’s charge on a pitch that was assisting the spinners. He took four wickets, and rattled the Aussie batting line-up with pace and reverse-swing.
Spinners, meanwhile, took five wickets in total. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets apiece, while Jayant Yadav took one. The Indian bowlers bowled inconsistently on a raging turner.

Earlier, Australia got a fantastic start from Matt Renshaw and David Warner. They added 82 runs on a pitch that was bouncing and turning from the first session itself. Renshaw went on to make a fifty.
Renshaw had to leave the field after Warner’s dismissal because of illness. But, he returned later to complete his fifty.
