Before he left the Indian shore for the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka, India Test skipper Virat Kohli emphasized the need of taking 20 wickets to win a Test match and how it’s important to have five bowlers in the playing XI to do the job effectively.
Virat Kohli said that the batsmen will have to take extra responsibility to score those extra runs in order to accommodate five bowlers.
He also added the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh are good with the bat and that gives an additional advantage to his team.
“That could be a big possibility. The idea is to take twenty wickets. That is the only way you can win a Test match,” Virat Kohli said. “I feel you need to bowl a stronger bowling side in order to win Test matches.”
“The whole idea of the five bowlers is that the top six have to take up more responsibility. We have people like Ravichandran Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harbhajan Singh who are very handy with the bat.”
“Ashwin averages forty in Test match cricket and I don’t see any reason why he cannot be that all-rounder for us,” the India captain pointed out.
Virat Kohli also indicated that India won’t shy away from playing three spinners in the playing eleven, if need arises. But the team will take a final call on the combination after considering the Sri Lankan conditions. Led by Virat Kohli, India will play a three-Test series in Sri Lanka this month.
