England vs West Indies: Will it be a Houseful in World T20 2016 Final?

England vs West Indies: Will it be a Houseful in World T20 2016 Final?

In the world of cricket it doesn’t get bigger than England versus the West Indies, as will be the case in the World T20 2016 final at the Eden Gardens, on Sunday.

The two best teams of the competition will be vying for the top slot. Sadly, in terms of interest, the City of Joy may not bestow this contest with requisite amount of enthusiasm.

Still reeling under the shock of the flyover collapse in the northern belt of the city, a final without India in the clash is something the local fan won’t have any excitement over.

Nonetheless, the show must go on – whether fans turn up or not, on Sunday evening, and one side is going to have the last laugh.

To the locals, and to much of India, it matters little what kind of Eden pitch will be prepared during the final tie – whether it will be a fresh one or a turner. Or who gets the maximum purchase – whether the bowlers get the required help or if the pitch assists the batsmen.

Even the TV advertiser and other sponsors may have lost their interest because India are out of the tournament and it doesn’t matter whether Chris Gayle scores the fastest T20 hundred or Jason Roy gives another flying start to the England innings.

It also doesn’t matter whether Darren Sammy wins the toss or whether Eoin Morgan opts to chase after winning the toss. Unlike the India-Pakistan match, it really doesn’t matter whether you have access to the final match ticket or not.

Kolkata had hosted England in the 1987 World Cup, which they lost to Australia and that final match without India was a houseful affair – whether it will be a jam-packed Eden Gardens is a tough one to predict. Whether it will be one-sided final is also something which is tough to predict.

Two things are common about the finalists – their performances were not up to the mark against Afghanistan in the league phase of the tournament. England, somehow, managed to pull through the match but the West Indies lost the Afghan game, which was quite an upset.

The second common thing is that they were able to beat the tournament favourites. After England stunned New Zealand, the West Indies wielded their fearless brand of cricket to knock India out in the semifinal matches.

What we do know is that the West Indies have already crushed England once in a league game – whether they shall do it again is something we shall have to wait to know.
