South Africa each time head into the World Cup with one scary squad, still they haven’t able to kiss the golden trophy in six attempts because of their habit of choking on crucial junctures.

The Proteas are yet to fulfil their potential at the biggest stage and pacer Dale Steyn insisted that the Africans are desperate to win the World Cup, after faltering on a number of occasions.

Steyn, who is South Africa’s bowling spearhead, said having players like AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla, Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel is a big plus.

“We are just trying to be a part of that puzzle, that when it’s finished, it has a big W on it,” Steyn said. “It’s nice to have inspiring guys like AB de Villiers and Vernon Philander.

“Watching AB bat, watching Hashim Amla bat, watching Vern and Morne Morkel perform, it makes you want to be a better player yourself,” he added.

Steyn said that co-host New Zealand are a dark horse in the tournament and are more than capable of taking the fight from the opposition.

“New Zealand are a dark horse team whenever there is a tournament around,” Steyn insisted. “New Zealand are one of those teams that can be nowhere for three years and get to a World Cup and they just suddenly turn it on.”

Steyn and Australian skipper Michael Clarke are no friends on the field, after the later sledged the former during a Test series earlier this year.

The Proteas lost the Test series but they won a tri-series in Zimbabwe by beating the former World Champions in the final.

“We all know Australia are a good team,” Steyn pointed out. “They’re in your face all the time. It’s pretty annoying really.”
